But when he was several feet away from the basket, Brian caught the pass, took two dribbles toward the basket, and went in strong for a layup. The ball bounced off the backboard and fell cleanly through the net.

After they had practiced for a good hour, Brian and George walked back to George’s room. Brian was quiet, embarrassed to say what was on his mind. It’d be great to practice some more before the scrimmage, he thought. And playing with George is so much less pressure than playing with Dad. Finally he spoke up. “Final cuts are coming up. Do you think I could come a couple extra times next week so we can practice some more?”

“Hmm … next week might be a little tough for me. But we’ll see. This week, though, I’m free as a bird,” George said.
